Trump woos Asian powers with golf and Taiwan promise

President Trump has moved to patch up relations with China and Japan as the White House hinted that it would prioritise the building of links with Asian powers over European alliances.

During a call with President Xi of China Mr Trump ruled out diplomatic recognition for Taiwan, which Beijing regards as a breakaway province.

It was a sharp shift in tone: last month he said that the One China policy, under which the US has no formal diplomatic relations with Taiwan, was under negotiation.
